- Tight achilles tendon.
- Flat feet (excessive pronation).
2. External factors:
- Footwear with a rigid back – soccer shoes, men’s dress shoes, golf shoes, or women’s pump-style shoes.
Signs and symptoms of Haglund’s Deformity:
- Bony enlargement at the back of the heel.
- Irritation at the back of the heel.
- Pain in the back of the heel.
- Swelling in the back of the heel.
- Redness or inflamed tissue at the site of the swelling.
Treatment of Haglund’s Deformity:
1. Surgery is an option
2. Non-surgical treatment options:
- Anti-inflammatory medication – to reduce the pain and inflammation.
- Ice – can help reduce inflammation.
- Stretching exercises – for the Achilles tendon can be helpful in some cases.
- Heel lifts and pads – inside the shoe decrease the tension on the Achilles tendon and pressure on the heel.
- Footwear modification – stretching of shoes in the painful area.
- Physical therapy – such as ultrasound, can help to reduce inflammation.
- Custom foot orthotic devices – designed to limit abnormal motion.
