Wearing the right shoes is an important part of looking after our feet. Many foot problems can be prevented or resolved by wearing the right shoes. To help prevent damage to your feet, apply the following rules when you buy:
Heel Height
This should have a broad base, and should be no greater than 5cm (2 inches). When wearing a high heel, your foot is pushed forward into the front of the shoe and the ball of your foot bears all the weight of your body.
Heel Counter (back of the shoe)
This reinforces the heel cup and stabilises the foot upon ground contact.
Cushioned Sole
Cushioning will help to absorb the force in the heels to ensure that knees, hips and spine and protection for comfortable walking, and enough grip to prevent slipping.
Upper
Ideally made from natural materials such as leather or breathable fabrics allowing moisture and sweat from the skin to evaporate, keeping your feet fresh. They need to be smooth and seam-free.
Adjustable Fastenings
Laces or straps with buckles or Velcro straps help to hold the foot securely within the shoe. A fastening stops your feet from sliding forward and backward inside your shoes and holds them firm.
Toe Box
There should be sufficient depth to prevent rubbing and allow toes to wiggle within the shoe.
Correct Size
There is approximately a half-inch of space between the front of the shoe and your longest toe. Try on shoes later in the day when your feet have swelled to their maximum size.
